Redneck Express Wins a round and runs another "5"!

Best of times , the worst of times

The crew for this race consisted of Crewchief Sharon Hand, Dick Boxell, Steve Legendre, Ronnie Geeslin, Plus Tim and Shirl Ganey after Tim lost the trans in his bike early Friday. Saturday Chuck Hunnycut and Dan Horton arrive to watch the days activities

Chris just a few days after Rockingham Race 1 undergoes back surgery and the needed downtime to heal correctly. During this time he painstakingly rebuilds the engines and makes ready for the Barber Vintage Festival where the bike is on display and they fire it up to hear the sounds of Nitro reverberate from the surrounding hills. The bike is ready for the finals after this

Chris, Sharon and Steve arrive at the track Thursday evening several hours ahead of me and drop the trailer at the track, and head to the motel. I arrive later get my armband then go to the motel .

Friday morning we set up the mobile Redneck Express Compound and make ready for the Friday nights first qualifying run. When we get the pegs on the bike Chris sits on the bike for the first time since the Rockingham win and says its OK

Friday Qualifying Round 1 –

With Merlin in the frame rails we get the bike fired up and ready for the call The call goes out and we push to the staging lanes.

Steve and Tim (we give Tim the standard 5 second long pushback lesson)go down-track and wait to push Chris back after the burnout. We have the right lane for this pass

We fire the bike and Chris burnouts to where they are standing. They push back peering through the tire smoke at my attempt to guide them

Chris lines up the bike, and Sharon starts the Racepac the lights flash yellow and the bike is on a good run all holes lit and even, then I see Chris’, right foot come off the peg and he shuts it down to a 8,749 , they get the bike back and we look at the numbers and it was on a good pass according to the short numbers, We leak down the engine and shows Merlin is a little hurt be it will make another pass, so we clean up and head out for some sleep.

Saturday Qualifying Round 2

The weather station is a lot happier here this weekend , the fuel is mixed and we fire the bike and sounds good! We are in the left lane for this pass

We fire the bike and Chris burnouts to where they are standing.

Push back complete

Chris brings the bike up to the line, Sharon arms the computer and lights flash and the bike is on a good run all holes lit up again, then then we see smoke from the back of the bike. They get the bike back and we look at the numbers and it was on a good pass according to the short numbers, Ends up running a 6.306 @ 183,17

We leak down the engine and shows Merlin is more than a little hurt

We set about changing engines for the next round of qualifying. Pull out Merlin and install Robert E. Lee and fire up in time for the next qualifier. The Drive tire is chunked so we change that also

Saturday Night Qualifying Round 3

The call goes out and we push to the staging lanes. We fire the bike and Chris burnouts to where they are standing.

Push back complete

Chris rolls up in the right lane, Sharon switches on the Racpac and the lights flash on and Chris leaves great and the holes are lit and even. The bike makes a move but Chris stays with it and runs a 6.816 @ 143.06.

Engine down to the block and damage is minimal

We end up number 4 on the qualifying list

Race day Sunday -Round 1 Elation then Horror and disbelief

Our competition for the first round is Korry Hogan on the Alwine machine.

The weather station is referred to and typical good Valdosta fall weather. Chris makes some changes the fuel system, more fuel is mixed and poured into the tank!

We get the RNE ready for first round, fire it up and it sounds healthy! The call goes out and we push to the staging lanes.

We fire the bike and Chris burnouts to where they are standing.

Push back complete

Chris rolls up in the right lane, Sharon switches on the Racpac and the lights flash on and Chris leaves great and the holes are lit and even. The bike is on a run with all holes lit all the way to the end.and runs a 5.981 226.16 we win round 1, BUT at the same time, we see down-track as the Alwine/Hogan bike has a mechanical issue and is seen sliding across the track in a ball of fire, not knowing where Korry was, praying that he was OK.

Great relief when they announced he was standing up in the shutdown area.

We get the bike and rider back to the pits perform leak down and REL is hurt so we pull the top end off again and Chris repairs the head issues and I manage to attend to installing the pistons and cylinder .

We also lose another Drive tire, this one chunked out pieces as big as your hand, Steve and Tim set to changing it out.

Race day Sunday –Semi Final

Our competition for the Semi Final is the consistently running 5s all weekend Dave Vantine. They have already called up Top Fuel to the lanes and apparently some on-track issues cause a delay and we fire up the bike , we hurry to the lanes where Dave Vantine told us "we heard you fire it up and knew you were close so we told them we would wait" Thanks all

We fire the bike and Chris burnouts to where they are standing.

Push back complete

Chris rolls up in the right lane, Sharon switches on the Racpac and the lights flash on and Chris leaves great and the holes are lit and even. The bike is on a run but the bike goes into tire shake and knocks Chris’ foot off the peg and he shuts it off to Daves thundering 5.795 @ 237.34.
